Weapons and Resident Evil director Zach Cregger is making a sci-fi movie next
Summary
Coming from Warner Bros. in 2028, the movie is also produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin and Cregger says it's 'the best thing I ever wrote'
Zach Cregger, the red-hot horror director behind Weapons, Barbarian, and this year's Resident Evil reboot, is switching genres to science fiction for his next project.
It's called The Flood, and it's an original movie that Cregger has written and will direct. (No, it's apparently not about the invasive alien race from the Halo games.) No details about the movie have been revealed, but it has a studio and a release date: Warner Bros., which backed Weapons, has scheduled The Flood for Aug. 11, 2028. Steven Spielberg is also involved through his production company Amblin Entertainment.
Cregger has spoken about the script before without giving anything away. In 2025 he told the Big Picture podcast that it is "my favorite thing" and "maybe the best thing I ever wrote." He wrote it after filming his breakout Barbarian but before shooting Weapons, and assumed he'd never get to make it, thinking, "I'll never direct this, so I'm just going to say 'who gives a shit' and not care โ which is, by the way, the best attitude."
The Flood isn't the only 2028 movie Cregger is working on at Warner Bros. The studio confirmed it's working on a Weapons prequel called Gladys about the earlier days of Amy Madigan's terrifying character. Cregger won't direct this one, but already had a story in mind for it and will co-write it with Zach Shields. Warner Bros. has scheduled Gladys for just a few weeks after The Flood; it will be released on Sept. 8, 2028.
