Summary

The modding team behind Skywind dropped a massive development update detailing its work on transforming Skyrim into Morrowind.

Skywind is an ambitious mod remaking The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind within The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. While it has been in the works since 2012 (Polygon first wrote about Skywind in 2014), its developers recently released a massive update video about the project after keeping their heads down for two years.

On May 8, the Skywind team released a new video on their YouTube channel detailing the work that the 100-plus volunteers have done since 2024. Most 2D and 3D art assets, as well as the majority of writing and voice acting, are nearing completion. 10 of Morrowind's 13 regions are nearly finished, while 75% of the animation work needed for the mod has been completed.

Despite all that progress, there are still some areas where the Skywind team has a lot of work to do. These include localizing the mod into several languages, creating more clothing assets, working on the Red Mountain region, mastering of the voice acting, and continuing to implement quests. That's likely why the Skywind team still isn't quite ready to share a release window for the mod.

Regardless of when it eventually launches, the scale of Skywind is truly impressive. This isn't a mod simply recreating Morrowind with assets you can find in Skyrim, but essentially a total conversion remaking one RPG classic within the game engine of another. Skywind's scope, coupled with its volunteer-driven development approach with high turnover, helps explain why the mod has taken so long to create.

Whenever the mod is finally released, it will only contain content from Morrowind's base game. Some preliminary work is being done on the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions by the teams furthest along in development.

Considering that Morrowind has yet to get the official remake treatment like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion did in 2025, Skywind really seems like it'll be the premier way to experience Morrowind when it finally comes out.
